Historical sites in lake area sought

The public is being asked to submit information concerning sites of historical value in the area that would be flooded by the proposed Little River Reservoir.

Lois Railey; chairperson of the historical committee of the Bell-Milam Land and Water Rights Association, said Monday that the group "urgently needs the public's assistance," to find the sites.

"Please include all cemeteries and family plots for all ethnic groups, old buildings and remnants of buildings constructed prior to 1900, historical markers, old homesteads and anything else that might be of historical importance," Railey said.

Railey said her committee needs to know the "exact" locations of the historical treasures and the owners of the land on which they are located. The landowners' addresses and telephone numbers would also be helpful, Railey said.

Persons with information can contact Railey at (254) 697-4776 (home) or at her office number (254) 697-2299.

"Cameron Lake" location

The following map section depicts the location of the lake based on the 330 foot elevation pool level. The pool is projected to cover 35,000 acres and when the necessary shoreline is included, the area covered would be about 54,000 acres.

The evaluation and planning for this lake is at an early stage and this map is strictly hypothetical at this time. It was prepared for Region H, Water Planning Group, Little River Reservoir by a joint venture between Brown & Root, Inc. and Turner Collie & Braden Inc. It is dated September 2000. The map was supplied by Nicholas Roberts who has dedicated substantial time to the evaluation of this project.
