Milam County Communities,Past and Present

Today, Milam County has three cities and six communitiesthat show up on most standard maps at the county scale. Before the days of theautomobile, the telephone and the train, a ten mile trip was a long and possiblydangerous adventure. Because of this, self-sufficient communities becameestablished to serve the common needs of small groups of families throughoutMilam County. Texas Handbook Online (THO) has articles on almost one hundredcommunities located in Milam County. Most still exist as collections of homesfor people working farms and ranches or jobs in towns in Milam and itsneighboring counties. Gone for the most part are the post offices, generalstores, feed stores, blacksmiths and cotton gins that once dotted each five toten miles of rural road.
