Milam County Communities, Past and Present

Today, Milam County has three cities and six communities that show up on most standard maps at the county scale. Before the days of the automobile, the telephone and the train, a ten mile trip was a long and possibly dangerous adventure. Because of this, self-sufficient communities became established to serve the common needs of small groups of families throughout Milam County. Texas Handbook Online (THO) has articles on almost one hundred communities located in Milam County. Most still exist as collections of homes for people working farms and ranches or jobs in towns in Milam and its neighboring counties. Gone for the most part are the post offices, general stores, feed stores, blacksmiths and cotton gins that once dotted each five to ten miles of rural road.
